Tutorial - Separating high-poly parts - by Puroistna Tutorial - Separating high-poly parts - by Puroistna
This can work for more parts than hair, you just need to check yourself. It all only depends on how  the thing was modeled, if the modeler joined parts then sadly this won't work too well.

When I try to download to see the bigger/non-thumbnail size, DA says there is an error with the deviation and cannot load it ;_;

Just double click the picture because it's in full view, or try again the download button later.

You can do the same in PMX by selecting a face and pressing Ctrl + X. Then you can separate the selected faces into a new material.

THANK YOU.

Seems the hair I wanted to separate has too many different layers, but this'll at least prevent me from having to crash-learn Blender. Thanks for this tip! :D

Switch to the triangle/face/delta selection mode (5 key) - it should enable both vertex and face selection. Select a face, it'll be coloured red and its three vertices will be selected. Now if you press Ctrl + X, it should select all contiguous faces (that is, if they have at least one common vertex) and their vertices. The same limitations apply as in Meta.
It works in 0.2.3.6 and 0.1.3.9 (both in PMD and PMX mode) - it might be missing from earlier versions.

I use the 0.1.3.9 version but for some reason nothing happens after I select one of the triangle faces that turn red and press Ctrl+X, tried on several models and parts. But thanks for explaining anyway.

You don't even need the PMD2MQO program. Just export the part as an .obj file, since Meta can read those.
